Turneffe Flats – Belize Fishing
There are a number of factors you consider in deciding on a saltwater fishing destination. We want to make it easy for you to get as good a feel for Turneffe Flats as you can without actually having been there. Hopefully, this brief summary about the “Turneffe Flats experience” will be helpful.
Thirty miles off the coast of Belize,Turneffe Flats is located on the Northeastern side of the Turneffe Atoll on a private point with white sand beach, great vistas and a wadeable bonefish flat right outside the door.For nearly three decades Turneffe Flats has been known as one of the Caribbean’s finest saltwater fly fishing destinations. Noted for its variety of saltwater fishing. The availability of bonefish, permit andtarpon make Turneffe Flats one of the rare spots in the world offering a legitimate shot at a GRANDSLAM. In addition, Turneffe offers opportunities for several other saltwater species. We encourage youto come prepared for a wide variety of fishing opportunities.
Although the spin fishing is exceptional, they are primarily a fly fishing destination. Turneffe have the privileged of a large repeat customer base with anglers from the finest fly shops and outfitters around the world making Turneffe Flats their annual saltwater fly-fishing destination.
Permit are the primary objective of many anglers at Turneffe Flats. On the bars and flats
within the Turneffe system, you can expect plenty of shots at permit averaging 10-20 pounds. You canalso expect to see some 30-40 pound permit. Permit fishing at Turneffe is primarily done from the bowof one of our Super skiffs, although there are some wading opportunities for permit.
For bonefish ocean-side flats are some of the most picturesque, wadable flats anywhere in theworld, containing large schools of bonefish as well as smaller schools and singles. These fish average3-5 pounds with some 8-12 pound fish.
Fishing the ocean-side flats at Turneffe offers something for anglers of all levels of expertise. Novicesaltwater anglers see hundreds of fish providing a good opportunity to learn the basics of saltwaterfishing. Experienced anglers find plenty of challenging fishing, particularly fishing to the smaller schoolsand larger singles.
In season, tarpon inhabit the creeks, channels and lagoons of the Atoll. Most tarpon jumpedare 60-90 lbs., with some fish to 150 lb. Most of our tarpon fishing is to rolling fish with limited sightfishing.Tarpon fishing is seasonal, as tarpon are migratory. Tarpon numbers begin to increase in April or Mayand drop off in September or October with peak tarpon months being June, July, and August. Thereare a few “resident” tarpon around Turneffe throughout the year.
The interior of the Turneffe Atoll offers miles of mangrove-lined bays, creeks andlagoons to fish for various snappers, jacks, and barracudas. Thiscan be some very exciting saltwater fishing – with either a fly rod or spin tackle.
Barracuda are an underrated and acrobatic game fish inhabiting the reefs at Turneffe in large numbers.Many anglers prefer to troll a fly for them, but they can also be taken by sight casting on the flats or byblind casting poppers into the deeper holes along the reef.
Along the reef, large snappers and jacks can be taken by casting deceiver patterns or poppers into thesurf.
Fishing schedule is as flexible as possible. A standard day’s fishing is about8 hours. Generally the fishing day begins after breakfast and ends in the late afternoon. We do insistthat everyone be back to the lodge well before dark for safety purposes.
During tarpon season, many anglers wish to begin fishing shortly after sunrise and take a rest duringthe day. There is a long, productive flat right in front of the cabins that allows the hard-core anglers achance to fish from sunup to sundown.
You will be given the daily option to take your lunch or return to the lodge for the noon meal. Lodgemanagement will coordinate your day’s fishing the prior evening.
The social center of Turneffe Flats is our Lodge. Incredible views from the upper and lower decks make the Lodge a favorite spot to relax. The Lodge includes dining room, bar, and sitting area as well as our gift shop and fly shop.
Meals are a tasty combination of Belizean and International dishes. Fresh seafood, local produce and home-baked pastries are standard fare. Depending upon your plans and your preference, you have the option to take a packed lunch or return for lunch each day. Following hors d’oeuvres and refreshments in the evening, dinner is comprised of soup or salad, entree and a delicious dessert. Entrees vary among seafood, chicken, pork and beef and we do our best to accommodate special dietary needs. Our bar is located in the Lodge just adjacent to the dining area with plenty of open space to gather after a day of fishing and adventure.
Our accommodations include eight large seaside guest rooms plus two large three-bedroom villas. Our seaside rooms have a panoramic view of the Caribbean and Turneffe Atoll reef. Our Reef Villa is located on the beach with a wonderful view of the reef. The Garden Villa is set back from the beach with a wonderful view as well. All rooms are air-conditioned and most are furnished with one queen size bed and one single bed. All rooms have private bathrooms.

Deposit & Cancellation Policy:
A deposit equal to 25% of the “Package” price is required to confirm a reservation, and is duewithin two weeks of the booking date. Deposits are refundable (minus a $100.00 handling fee per package) up to 60 days priorto the start of a trip. Within 60 days prior to the start of a trip, the deposit is not refundable for any reason unless we are able tore-sell your space. No refunds are available for unused portions of packages. We recommend that you purchase tripcancellation insurance.
